THE GAME: The Angels snapped a seventh-inning tie for the second straight game, this time to beat the San Diego Padres, 5-3, on Monday at Tempe Diablo Stadium. The Angels improved to 3-0 this spring.
PITCHING REPORT: RH J.C. Ramirez pitched a perfect first inning, with two strikeouts, but then he gave up two walks and two hits and couldn’t get out of the second. Ramirez said he was fatigued, still not being used to working more than one inning. Ramirez is in camp as a starter, but he pitched well for the Angels as a reliever last season, and he’s likely to be in the bullpen again this season. He also said he can get stronger and keep trying to start as long as the Angels want to keep the experiment going… LH Nate Smith, one of the top starting pitching prospect in the system, pitched two scoreless innings in his spring debut. Smith has an outside shot at winning the fifth spot in the Angels rotation. He is likely to be at Triple-A, where he would compete to be the next pitcher up when the Angels need a sixth starter … RH Mike Morin gave up a run on two hits and a walk.
HITTING REPORT: CF Mike Trout, one of five Angels regulars making their spring debut, drew walks in each of his two plate appearances… 3B Yunel Escobar, RF Kole Calhoun, LF Cameron Maybin and 2B Danny Espinosa also played for the first time this spring… Espinosa drove in a run with a single… SS Andrelton Simmons hustled to second on a fly ball to center field. He was then able to score on Calhoun’s single into right. Calhoun then got picked off first by Padres C Austin Hedges, an Orange County product… The Angels also scored a run when Hedges threw the ball to second in a first-and-third situation, allowing the runner to come home from third before the third out… 2B David Fletcher doubled and scored the go-ahead run on a double by 3B Kaleb Cowart in the seventh inning.
DEFENSE REPORT: Simmons cut off a throw to third after a single to right field and fired…
