Spring brings out the best in everything, flowers, people and events around the county. The April Walking Tours have been a great success this year, with Courtland and Hatton also taking part in the event, which starts at 10:00 a.m. each Saturday of the month of April.
One of the highlights on Moulton’s tour this year which has drawn great interest is the old Lawrence County Jail. Visitors were treated to a tour of it by LC Sheriff Gene Mitchell and Captain Tim McWhorter.
The Red Hat Society of LC was also well represented last week, dressed in full red/purple regalia; they added a touch of spice to the tour as they viewed numerous historic homes and other places of interest in downtown Moulton.
The last tour of the month (April 29th) brings together several entities. The Walking Tour, which will be guided by LC Chamber of Commerce Director, Jason Houston, will concentrate on the history of the square, which is on the historic register, and will again include the old jail (as will the tour on April 22). The last tour to go through the old jail on April 29, will have a real treat, as LC native and author of “My Father the Ghost” author, Jack Smith, will be there to tell his first-hand accounts of life as a sheriff’s son, whose bedroom for several years was a jail cell. He will bring copies of his books for those who might not have had the opportunity to read it.
Also taking place that day is a benefit concert and barbecue, hosted by the Friends of the Parker Road Animal Shelter (FPRAS). The gospel concerts begin as the Walking Tour departs from the LC Archives, at 10:00 a.m. with The Abundant Life Trio taking the stage on the courthouse square.
Following the Abundant Life Trio, at 11:30, Alabama author Delos Hughes will speak about his book, “Historic Alabama Courthouses; A Century of Their Images and Stories.” Mr. Hughes was teaching political theory in Virginia when he became intrigued with Thomas Jefferson. “Jefferson had designed a courthouse there and I was interested in the architecture,” said Hughes. “A friend recommended…
