• Trainer Todd Pletcher believes Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming is ready for a big effort in Saturday’s Preakness. “The horse is doing unbelievably well in the two-week turnaround,” said Pletcher, who doesn’t like running his horses only two weeks apart. “The way he’s moving, the way he’s acting, the way he’s getting over the track, we feel really blessed that he’s coming into the race this way. I’m someone who has been in a lot of races and lost a lot of races, so I know you don’t want to be overconfident, but I do feel very, very good about the way he’s coming into it.”

• Champion 4-year-old filly Songbird worked six furlongs in a bullet (fastest at the distance) 1:11.80 Thursday morning at Santa Anita under regular rider Mike Smith. “She went very well,” said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who wouldn’t commit afterward to the Medaglia d’Oro filly’s 2017 debut. Hollendorfer has said Songbird will run in either the $400,000 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita on June 3 or the $1 million Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park on June 10. Asked after the work if Songbird will stay home and face Stellar Wind in the Beholder Mile, Hollendorfer said, “I don’t know. She might run in New York.”
