Robinson Crusoe island life is yours for just £500 a month

The rare chance to live a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle has become available after a tiny idyllic island was put up for rent – for just £500 a month.

Ynys Giftan is an 18-acre island in the Dwyryd Estuary within the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.

It overlooks the Italianate village of Portmeirion and has incredible views of the coastline, mountains and the Irish Sea.

But the knock-down rental price comes with a catch as whoever takes on the remote paradise will need to spend upwards of £100,000 renovating the ramshackle farmhouse on it.

The island is part of the Glyn Estate and the owner, the 7th Baron Harlech, is letting it out on a 20-year improving lease so someone can bring it back to life.

The tenant would be required to fully renovate the farmhouse and the reduced annual ground rent reflects the level of investment required.

The prospective tenant could either focus on the farmhouse to create an idyllic bolthole or it could become an eco-tourism business with something like a glamping site.

The successful tenants have to pitch for the property and are being advised to come up with creative proposals.

Lord Harlech’s ancestors were gifted the island by Queen Anne in the early 1700s and the name Ynys Giftan means ‘Anne’s Gift Island’.

It was run as a farm but has been uninhabited for the last 20 years.
