‘Moonlight’ wins grand prize after Oscars blunder

Veteran actor and filmmaker Warren Beatty accidentally announces the winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture as ‘La La Land’, before the award is correctly given to ‘Moonlight’. Ryan Brooks reports.

Shock and embarrassment as the Oscars reached fever pitch on Sunday night.
And the winner is….
(SOUNDBITE) (English) FAYE DUNAWAY SAYING:
“La La Land.”
… or was it?
(SOUNDBITE) (English) “LA LA LAND” PRODUCER JORDAN HOROWITZ, SAYING:
“This is not a joke, Moonlight has won best picture.”
With live cameras rolling, presenters read out the WRONG envelope for the most important award-
– a dramatic Oscars upset playing out in real time…
(SOUNDBITE) (English) “MOONLIGHT” DIRECTOR BARRY JENKINS, SAYING:
“It is true, it’s not fake. We’ve been on the road with these guys for so long and that was so gracious, so generous of them, my love to ‘La La Land,’ my love to everybody.”
Moonlight earlier swooped the award for best adapted screenplay.
But La La Land looked almost sure to win the night, right until the very end, having won best score and best song for “City of Stars,” as well as best director for 32-year-old Damien Chazelle, and best actress for Emma Stone.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) EMMA STONE, SAYING:
“I still have a lot of growing and learning and work to do and this guy is a really beautiful symbol to continue on that journey and I am so grateful for that, so thank you so much.”
The best actor prize went to to Casey Affleck, who beat out Denzel Washington for his role in ‘Manchester by the Sea.’
