Another day, another evening Trumpster fire.
“This happens, literally, every day now,” Trevor Noah observed at the top of Thursday’s Daily Show. “We start the day going, ‘I can’t believe what Trump did yesterday.’ And then by the end of it, it’s more like, ‘I can’t remember what Trump did yesterday. That was so long ago.”
Mercifully for TV’s late night hosts, Thursday’s bombshell broke too late for them to do anything with the revelation that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein confirmed in a closed-door Senate hearing that the president had told him he was going to fire FBI director James Comey before assigning him to write the memo justifying the move.
Instead, they delved into Rosenstein’s decision to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller as the special counsel to lead the Department of Justice’s investigation one day earlier.

“The twist is that the counsel was appointed by the deputy attorney general and lesser Buscemi, Rod Rosenstein,” Colbert recapped. Remember him? Last week, when the administration was looking for someone to blame for the Comey firing, they tried to throw Rosenstein under the bus, forgetting that as deputy AG, he’s actually the bus driver.”

After a reading of President Trump’s memo acknowledging Mueller’s appointment and saying he looks forward to concluding the matter quickly, Noah noted, “That’s a smart response. It’s calm, it’s measured, it’s appropriate. It’s also clearly not from him. For real Trump, you have to wait until the morning.”
After clips of reporters announcing, “the president is awake and angry,” Noah wondered if we’re being governed by the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. “Fee fie foe thumb, I smell the counsel of a special one!”
