Concordia University Irvine paints NCAA logos, prepare for Division II membership – Orange County Register
IRVINE — Concordia University Irvine painted National Collegiate Athletic Association’s iconic blue logos on its gym floor Friday, May 19, as the Eagles prepare to become the only full Division II member in Orange County.
The private nonprofit four-year university is expected to hear from NCAA by mid-July that it has completed the three-year membership process, according to Concordia officials.
“We are very excited to become a full NCAA Division II member soon,” Concordia President Kurt Krueger said in a statement. “The decision by the NCAA would be a testament to our core values, faculty and staff, as well as the integrity of our athletics department toward NCAA compliance, our university’s fiscal responsibility, and our commitment to high academic standards.”
Concordia, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, began the NCAA DII membership process in July 2014. The Eagles have competed as a provisional member in the Pacific West Conference, which includes Azusa Pacific, California Baptist, Fresno Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene, as well as schools in Hawaii, the Bay Area and Utah.
Concordia would be eligible for postseason action if it becomes a full member of NCAA, which governs more than 1,200 collegiate athletic programs in the U.S.
“With an athletics program known for outstanding graduation rates, academic honors and a school committed to integrity and the well-being of the student-athlete, joining the NCAA benefits everyone,” Athletics Director Mo Roberson said in a statement. “NCAA DII will allow our student-athletes to seamlessly blend their academic and athletics careers into a balanced lifestyle.”
Concordia has 19 varsity sports and about 450 student-athletes.
