Alyssa Evavold: From hoop dreams to equestrian arts

BATTLE LAKE — Battle Lake senior Alyssa Evavold devotes most of her time to the equestrian arts, whether it be for leisure, competition or career, horses play a large role in her future plans. Evavold’s passion started when she was 10 years old with her first horse and it has given her  direction in life and the drive to pursue it.

I sat down to talk with Evavold about her upcoming graduation, what she’s looking forward to and how she hopes to piggyback her love for horses into a college major and eventual career. 

Q: What sports do you play for the school here in Battle Lake?

A: I play basketball. I have played volleyball but I don’t anymore.

Q: When did you stop playing volleyball?

A: I think I stopped in 10th grade.

Q: Why did you stop playing volleyball?

A: It wasn’t for me and I ride horse so I like to do that in my free time.

Q: How was the basketball season for you?

A: It was really fun.

Q: How did the team do?

A: It wasn’t our best season ever but we all worked really well together, so we had a lot of fun.

Q: Being that you like to ride horses do you compete in rodeos?

A: I just show for 4-H. I’m with the Eagle Lake 4-H club.

Q: What does showing horses for 4-H entail?

A: We have the fair every year, the Otter Tail County Central and I do almost everything except for trail riding and English riding, so I do western. So some games like barrels and jumping, figure-eight and poles and also just western pleasure and western horsemanship.

Q: How did you get started in horse showing?

A: I’ve always had an interest in horses. I kept asking my parents for one and then they said when I was 10 I could get a horse so they got me a horse when I was 10 and I’ve been interested in it ever since.

Q: My experience has been that little girls always want a pony growing up and you pulled off the impossible?

A: (Laughs) Yeah, I think most people usually grow out of that but not me.
